Run Like MADD event set for Saturday

By Ed Harris Editor Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will host a Walk Like MADD event originating at the town green this weekend. The walk is a 5K event that raises funds for victim services and awareness of drunk driving. This is the second year the event will take place in town. “Our walk in Southington started last year, in 2012,” said Rick Gentile, a special events coordinator with MADD’s Connecticut state office. “I as a volunteer approached MADD to a start a walk because I wanted to bring awareness to my community about MADD’S mission. Our mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and the prevention of underage drinking.” The walk will start at the town green and will go down Center Street, to the canal line and back through Plantsville, along Main Street, and then back to the green. This year’s walk is dedicated to Michael Albert. Albert was killed by a drunk driver on July 28, 1986, at the age of 26. According to statistics provided by MADD, drunk driving is the nation’s most frequently committed violent crime. In 2011, 92 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in Connecticut alone. [...]
