By Lindsay Carey Staff Writer The United States Navy Band’s jazz ensemble, the “Commodores,” is making a stop in Southington for a performance on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m., as a part of their 2014 National Tour. The Commodores are a group of 19 jazz and big band musicians, and is just one of the U.S. Navy Band’s ensembles. The Kiwanis Club has procured the Commodores before, as well as another ensemble known as the Sea Chanters. The last time the Kiwanis Club hosted the U.S. Navy Band in Southington was in 2011. “They come every three or four years,” said Beverly Skinnon, president of the Kiwanis Club. “They’re busy most of the year performing for the president and doing military funerals. It takes a long time to get them.” The U.S. Navy Band has been performing at public concerts and events around the states for about 85 years. “It’s the perfect day to honor all the men and women who have served in the armed forces, to give back to the community and instill a sense of patriotism,” said Skinnon.
