New lease on life for the DePaolo landfill

By Ed Harris Editor The old DePaolo Drive land fill has a new lease on life. The Town Council Monday night unanimously voted to lease the property to Supreme Forest Products for the next 20 years. “We’re leading the way in putting landfills back into use,” said Town Attorney Mark Sciota. DePaolo Drive is a cul-de-sac street by the intersection of West Queen and West Streets. The 19-acre landfill has been capped since the early 1980s and the  site only being monitored. The Planning and Zoning Commission recently gave the go ahead on site plans for the project. Now that the Town Council has agreed to the lease, the company is applying for Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) approval. “Our goal here is to use the landfill for storage,” said Supreme Forest Vice President Mark Vigneault. The company plans to store various wood materials at the site, as well as asphalt, gravel, topsoil and other earthen materials. This is the second such facility in the state,  Sciota said.
